Junior Tennis Players Suffer The Weather Blues As Well!

By RON SMITH, SPORTS EDITOR

PRESCOTT [14th May, 2011] -- It's been a tough spring for high school tennis players.
That's probably one of the reasons only 33 players from three schools showed up at the Leeds and Grenville high school tennis championships here on Thursday.
With less than five schools taking part in the one-day championships, the competition was regarded as a testival.
That means there are no medals or ribbons given out to the top individuals and teams but the top two in singles and doubles do advance to EOSSAA on Tuesday, May 24 in Kingston.
South Grenville of Prescott, St. Michael of Kemptville and Gananoque were the only schools to send athletes.

It was a combination of a bad spring with wind, rain and cold, along with several schools changing coaches and not being able to get organized in time for the tournament, noted tennis convenor Muriel Franklin of South Grenville.

In senior boys singles, it was Ron Harrison of South Grenville beating Tighe Bloskie of St. Michael in the final.

In senior boys doubles, the team of Kyle Szeto and Alex Stephenson of South Grenville downing Phil Biccum and Ryan Maggio, also of South Grenville.

In junior boys, Erik Thibodeau of St. Michael beat Tyler Hartley of Gananoque in singles play.

In doubles, it was Dunner Gill and Spencer Dishaw of South Grenville over Corey Holmes and Jackson Traynor of St. Michael.

In senior girls singles, Kami Marchand of South Grenville and Siobhan O'Hanlon, also of South Grenville, will be advancing to EOSSAA.

In junior doubles, it will be Leslie Carrothers and Cassidy King of South Grenville, along with Amelia Carrothers and Tara Bailey, also of South Grenville, headed to Kingston.

In senior mixed doubles, the Leeds and Grenville representatives will be Tyler Dunnington and Faith Casselman along with Phil Wiseman and Cydney Smith, all of South Grenville.
