KCTC's 2012 Year End Social Tourney!

Calling all MEMBERS of Kemptville Community Tennis Club: Come on out to the courts for a year end celebration, social and tennis tournament on Saturday 22nd September. Various fun court events will occur from 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM. You are welcome to stay all day or come and go as your events allow.

The club will host lunch via the expertise of Dial-A-Chef Erick LePors's awesome BBQ spread between 11:30 - 1:30 pm. It is bound to be a tasty surprise. In addition, the club will provide some light refreshments for members. To 'book-end' the BBQ lunch please bring some snacks and/or baked goods and a few non-alcoholic beverages to complement the lunch experience.

Proposed agenda for the day:
9:30 - 10:15 am - Tennis Lesson for Adult beginners (just to warm things up)
10:30 - 1:00 pm - Tommy & Lefebvre Racket Demos available to try and maybe buy
11:00 - 12:00  Children / Teen - Fun Tennis Tournaments (Ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-14)
Register your catagory soon to provide participant numbers.
12:00 - 1:30  Doubles Tournaments.
Register soon to determine final format for Mens, Womens and/or Mixed Doubles.
1:30 - 3:00  Men's / Ladies Singles Tournament.
Register soon.
NOTE: A final schedule will be sent out by Sept 20th - since some times may change slightly based on participation.

Let's make this a BIG turnout to enjoy the new tennis courts, socialize with other members you don't normally see or play with during the season and have a little fun along the way. KCTC wants the event to have the best chance at good weather by holding it this early but hopes the membership continues playing until the nets are removed!

Hope to see everyone on Sept 22nd with racket in hand, some treats in tow, a lawn chair to sit in and a strong appetite for tennis, food and fun in the sun!

IMPORTANT: Please RSVP for lunch and/or tournament catagories by WEDNESDAY 19th Sept.

2012 KCTC Open Day

Well it was a beautiful day today to be on the tennis courts ......thanks to everyone who had an opportunity to come out this morning. It was so nice to see all 4 courts in operation from 9:45 am till past 12:30 .....wow. If today was any indication of what is to come this year - we are going to have a fantastic year. Thanks to all of you.

Couple of key things to remember:
1) Kemptville Community Tennis Club members have priority for the courts Mon-Fri (6-8 pm) and Sat (9-noon) - so please don't be shy come on out as often as you can.
2) Not too late to join as a member ...... just email me / call me or show up to the court during club hours
3) Start thinking and planning for the Kids Camps - July 16th, July 30th, Aug 13th 9-10 and 10-11 am.....I would like to be 80-90% certain of the sizes by June 1st - so I can arrange for an appropriate number of instructors (so please check your schedules and let me know as soon as you can)
4) Tennis Balls - as you know we are one of the few (if only) Tennis Clubs - that provide balls to members during club hours. However, as a club fund raising tool - if you are interested in purchasing new balls - you can buy them from the Club for $5 - this way you have a can - just in case no one is around one evening.
5) Group Lessons - I will publish a schedule in the next week or so .....but we will have group lessons on Saturday mornings (and several evenings from time to time) approximately every 3 weeks for different age / skill groups
6) Private Lessons - many of you have asked if private lessons are available - this year if you are interested - I will be offering private lessons - the fee will be $25 / hour or $40 / hour if there is 2 people .... this can be for children and adults .......this is for beginners. (40% of all monies earned from private lessons will be going back to the Club)
7) Tennis Club Member distribution list - after the next 2 weeks - I will start only sending tennis specific messages to those who have joined the tennis club (this way a number of you won't receive unnecessary emails)

Watch for news on ......theme nights for the different nights of the week ....... member distribution list / contact list on line.......means to see on-line who is playing which night .....and very exciting news (a windscreen installation day)......

Wanna Know Your Tennis Skill Level?

For KCTC's mixed bag of players, most of us would like to have an idea of our skill level without going to a bootcamp or doing a fancy skill testing session to get the answer. Well, in North America (USA, Canada & Mexico) the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) system has replaced all other classification systems, including the A (expert), B (intermediate) and C (beginner) skill categories once used in local tennis tournaments, by using a scale from 1.0 to 7.0.

So use the following NTRP skill levels to tell others where you belong (If you're a 7.0, we could be a boring bunch to you!):

1.0 This player is just starting to play tennis.
1.5 Has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.
2.0 Needs on-court experience. Has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play.
2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.
3.0 Fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up and one-back.
3.5 Has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. Starting to exhibit more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.
4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident. Rallies may be lost due to impatience.
4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.
5.0 Has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or exceptional consistency around which a game may be structured. Can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys and overhead smashes and has good depth and spin on most second serves.
5.5 Has developed power and/or consistency as a major weapon. Can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hit dependable shots in a stress situation.

6.0  Players generally do not need NTRP ratings. Rankings or past rankings will speak for themselves.
6.0 player has obtained a sectional and /or national ranking.
6.5 The 6.5 player has extensive satellite tournament experience.
7.0 The 7.0 player makes his living from tournament prize money.

Note: The International Tennis Federation uses a skill rating system where the most skilled players (the pros) are classed at level 1, and the least skilled, at level 10.
